Amazon customers and other mail-order patrons are turning small towns on the northern border into the P.O. box for Canada.

Blaine, Sumas and Oroville, Washington are home to a remarkable profusion of mailbox stores that mostly cater to online shoppers from British Columbia.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection has finalized shorter hours for several border crossings in northeastern Washington state, effective this fall. The reduction in operating hours in one case was modified based on protests from the local community.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection plans to reduce operating hours at a border crossing between Danville, Washington, and Grand Forks, British Columbia, and residents in Ferry County, Washington aren’t pleased.

The U.S. Senate wants to put a stop to Border Patrol checkpoints and warrantless searches taking place far from the border with Canada. The policy change was included in an amendment to the larger immigration overhaul being debated this week. It pleases civil liberties and immigrant advocates, but concerns frontline Border Patrol agents.

Fresh statistics from the U.S and Canadian governments show cross-border traffic between British Columbia and the American Northwest surged in the first quarter of 2013. Canadian visitors account for nearly all of the increase, despite a mild slowdown in economic growth there.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection

The federal government announced a pilot project Wednesday to pre-inspect some trucks before they cross into the U.S. from Canada. That will have U.S. officers working on Canadian soil.

The ultimate goal is to reduce congestion and wait times at busy border crossings. Michelle James, U.S. Customs and Border Protection field operations director in Seattle, says Canada has agreed to allow U.S. officers to staff a new inspection booth amongst the cargo trucks queuing at the Pacific Highway crossing near Blaine, Washington.
