Communities around the Northwest Tuesday honored the men and women who’ve served in the nation’s armed services.
Colonel Charles McDaniel, wing commander of Fairchild Air Force Base, told a crowd in Spokane that sacrifices by veterans have helped make the U.S. and the world a better place.
“Our ultimate hope one day is that all nations will be at peace and we will call each other friends,” he said. “However, that’s not where we are in the world today. That’s why we have an Air Force, an Army, a Navy, a Marine, a Coast Guard.”
Towns from Medford, Oregon, to Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, held Veterans Day parades and ceremonies Tuesday. The Oregon Historical Society also opened a traveling exhibit in Eugene on Japanese American servicemen in World War II. And starting this week the Idaho Department of Transportation is issuing drivers licenses with a special “veteran” designation.
