Travel experts say holiday driving around the Northwest will be especially treacherous this year. Snow, wind, rain and ice are predicted through Christmas. This week, a man from Kennewick died in a car wreck on I-90 during snowy weather in central Washington.
First rule? Yes, you’ve heard it before: “Slow down.”
In case you didn't get that, Alice Fiman, a spokeswoman from Washington’s Department of Transportation adds, “And even if you think you’re going slow enough, slow down again.”
Fiman says around the holidays, there are always a lot more travelers. So, plan some extra time. Also, this: Know the weather conditions before you go.
“A lot of times during the holidays, people take roads they may not take on a daily basis," Fiman says. "They go to some places they don’t visit very often.”
Finally, be prepared for possible hazardous conditions inside your car.
“Maybe have some activities for the kids in the car. Have some snacks, food, water, extra warm clothes available.”
And once again, she says, “Slow down!”
