Demonstrators in Pasco, Washington, are holding a vigil Thursday at a bakery in memory of Antonio Zambrano-Montes. He was shot by police seven months ago on a corner near the bakery.
Zambrano-Montes had been throwing rocks nearby at a busy intersection and ran from police. The Franklin county prosecutor announced Wednesday no police would be charged in the shooting.
Nancy Cornejo of Kennewick said she came to the vigil to support Zambrano-Montes’ family.
“I think it’s quite a shock to the Pasco community because nothing like this has ever happened,” he said. “And so knowing that it happened so close to home and they probably never expected this to happen to their son, it’s just...it’s really heartbreaking.”
The Latino Civic Alliance said in a statement Thursday it rejects the prosecutor’s decision to not file charges against police. Demonstrators protested the prosecutor’s announcement and are scheduled to convene again Saturday.
An external review of the charging decisionrequested by Governor Jay Inslee is underway at the state attorney general’s office.
