Two former Jesuit officials resign from Gonzaga University after revelations about abusive priests

Two priests in high-level positions at Gonzaga University resigned today. Both previously held leadership roles in the Jesuits’ Oregon Province while it sent Jesuits accused of sexual abuse to live in a home on campus.

For the first time, Gonzaga University could bring the NCAA Division I men’s basketball championship trophy home to Spokane. The Bulldogs beat the South Carolina Gamecocks 77-73 in Phoenix Saturday in the semifinal round of the Final Four.

If the Gonzaga Bulldogs and the Oregon Ducks dominate at the Final Four on Saturday, the NCAA men's championship basketball trophy will come back to the Northwest.

"Anything can happen," said University of Oregon student reporter Jack Butler of the Oregon Daily Emerald. "And if you’re one of four teams you have a chance."

Two Division I men’s college basketball teams in the Northwest made history Saturday: The Oregon Ducks and the Gonzaga Bulldogs advanced to the NCAA Final Four.

The Gonzaga University men's basketball team will advance to the Elite Eight in the NCAA Division One Tournament for only the third time in the program's history. Top-seeded Gonzaga beat No. 4 West Virginia 61-58 Thursday night in a tense, defensive Sweet 16 round battle.

With 22 straight wins and no losses, the Gonzaga University men’s basketball team are the only undefeated NCAA Division 1 basketball team in the nation. And now the Bulldogs have secured the top ranking in the country’s two major polls.

The hometown of former Speaker of the House Tom Foley is mourning the longtime politician's death. Foley represented Spokane and a large swath of eastern Washington from 1965 to 1995.

The president of Gonzaga University has reversed an earlier decision and now says a campus chapter of the Knights of Columbus can receive official club status. The Catholic university in Spokane first denied that recognition because the Knights do not admit women or non-Catholics.

President Thayne McCulloh's decision allows the Knights of Columbus council to use the university's name in its title, use school facilities and fundraise on campus. Official club status also makes the group eligible for money from the university and student fees.

The University of Oregon Ducks have made it to the Sweet Sixteen -- the final 16 teams in the national college men's basketball tournament. But No. 1-seed Gonzaga University is out, after a shocking defeat to Wichita State over the weekend. Students and alumni of the small Catholic school in Spokane may be in mourning. But as far as school admissions go, Gonzaga has already won, big time.

SPOKANE, Wash. - Gonzaga University basketball fans are jittery after a near-loss for the small Catholic school with high hopes for March Madness. Gonzaga's men's basketball team narrowly won its first game in the national tournament on Thursday when it played Louisiana's Southern University.

SPOKANE, Wash. - Basketball fans in the Inland Northwest are in a very good mood today. The new Associated Press poll for men's college basketball ranks Gonzaga University number one in the country. It's a first for Gonzaga – and the state of Washington.

Traditional basketball powers like Indiana and Duke,just couldn't hold their grip on the top spot. But Spokane's small, Catholic school kept winning through the weekend, to practically guarantee them the top spot.

SPOKANE, Wash. - Leaders at Gonzaga University are asking What Would Jesus Do about climate change? The Jesuit school in Spokane, Wash., has adopted a plan for zero greenhouse gas emissions by the year 2050.

Over the next four decades, Gonzaga University plans to make a dramatic switch to green energy, some of it generated at new facilities on campus. Meeting the goal will also require major cuts in energy use. Car travel to campus by students and faculty, and Zags basketball trips to away games are all part of the final emissions tally.
