The Chelan County Sheriff's Office said a juvenile inmate who escaped from the fire lines in north central Washington and shot himself in the head is expected to survive.

The 16-year-old escaped from a fire camp Friday night after assaulting a guard. He had stolen a gun from a truck parked near the camp.

Deputies found the inmate after a bystander reported seeing him the next morning. After briefly talking with them, he shot himself. He was then flown to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.

A sheriff’s office spokesman says two other juvenile inmates also attempted to escape Friday night. They were caught.

The two inmate crews fighting fires on the Chelan Complex have been sent back to their facilities.
