Eastern Washington’s Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers is the most powerful Republican woman in the U.S. House of Representatives. And now, she’s speaking out against President Donald Trump’s decision to end Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals—or DACA.
???In a statement, McMorris Rodgers said she did not agree with how the Obama administration went about implementing DACA, but she also called for the protection of children of people who entered the country illegally who already reside in the U.S. and who are currently protected under President Barack Obama's executive order from 2012.??
“That principle is fundamental to me,” McMorris Rodgers said. “It’s also clear that we must work in congress to provide long-term certainty for DACA recipients.” ??
The non-profit Northwest Immigrant Rights Project with offices across Washington, will host a series of forums for recipients of DACA in the coming months.
The president has given congress six months to develop a new immigration policy.
Editor's note: this story has been corrected to reflect that DACA is an executive order as opposed to a law passed by Congress.
