Yakima County, Washington, predominantly voted for Donald Trump during the general election. But just hours after President Trump announced he was ending the DACA program in six months, 75 DACA supporters gathered downtown.
Yakima County is home to the state’s second-largest population of Dreamers—recipients of DACA, the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program.
Sixteen-year-old Jose said he's worried about his future and that of his family.
“I’m just scared right now, that one day I’ll come home and nobody will be there,” he said.
But people shared more than their fears. They also talked about the fine print.
Though the DACA program is not accepting new applications, current recipients can still renew their status—but only if their current permit expires before next March. They need to re-apply by October 5 in order to stay in the U.S. legally for two more years. ?
Congress has six months to develop new policies to protect Dreamers.
