Roadway damage on the west side of US 12 at White Pass

U.S. Highway 12 at White Pass is still closed to all but local residents both east and west. The state’s Department of Transportation is working to clear three rockslides and one washout. But there is still no estimate for reopening the highway.

That’s hitting White Pass ski resort’s holiday time business. The resort is losing valuable fresh snow days to the closed pass, but its website says season passes will be honored for five days at two other ski areas, Mission Ridge near Wenatchee and 49 Degrees North near Spokane.

This week, more than 50 state workers and contractors from across the state are attacking slide areas and washouts on both sides of the pass.

The state is also using small drones to survey the damage both upslope and down of the roadway.
