Alpine Ascents International Monday released the name of the second company guide who was killed in this weekend’s climbing tragedy on Mount Rainier. His name was Eitan Green, a Colby College graduate from the Boston area. He was based in Seattle and had guided for Alpine Ascents since 2009.
Green had climbed, trekked and guided all over the world and was fluent in Nepali. His blog shows a slideshow of a past climb on Mount Rainier’s challenging Liberty Ridge -- the route where the climbers died.
Also killed was lead guide Matt Hegeman, who had ascended Rainier more than 50 times.
Condolences are pouring in from all over the world to Alpine Ascents’ Seattle office and on its Facebook page. In addition to the two guides, four paying clients were killed.
The Seattle Times published a statement from Holly Mullally who says her husband John was one of the victims. He was a Microsoft employee who leaves behind two young daughters. The family of Mark Mahaney of Minnesota previously confirmed he was also a member of the climbing party. And now Intel has released a statement saying the head of its Southeast Asia operations, Uday Marty, is among the lost climbers.
Alpine Ascents says it’s cancelling a second planned climb on Liberty Ridge that was scheduled for later this month.
